Antioxidants May Improve Children's Asthma
10/21/2002
Antioxidants May Improve Children's AsthmaDURHAM, N.C.--Antioxidant supplementation may improve moderate to severe asthma in children by modulating the impact of ozone exposure in their airways, according to research in the Sept. 1 issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (166:703-9, 2002) (http://ajrccm.atsjournals.org). Researchers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in cooperation with researchers from Mexico, randomly assigned 158 asthmatic children in Mexico City to receive either an antioxidant regimen (50 mg/d of vitamin E and 250 mg/d of vitamin C) or a placebo. Children underwent pulmonary testing twice a week and were followed from October 1998 to April 2000. Results indicated ozone levels one day before testing adversely affected pulmonary tests in the placebo group, but they did not affect test scores in the supplement group.
