EAS Releases Report on EU Regulatory Status
05/06/2002
EAS Releases Report on EU Regulatory StatusBRUSSELS--To coincide with the adoption of the EU Directive on Food Supplements, the European Advisory Services (EAS) announced the publication of Marketing Food Supplements, Fortified and Functional Foods in Europe 2002. The 140-page report gives an overview of the EU rules and detailed charts on the different regulations of 20 EU countries for food supplements and fortified and functional foods. It also reviews the status and impact of the draft directive on traditional herbal medicines and the EU legislation on PARNUTS (foods for particular nutritional uses). In addition, half of the report is devoted to the European and national rules on health claims. The report can be ordered from the EAS Web site (www.eas.be). "The Directive is a positive step that has opened up some significant opportunities for cross-border trade, but generally it is still not easy for companies to market food supplements across Europe," said Stefanie Geiser, regulatory affairs manager at EAS. Until these rules and health claims policies are harmonized, manufacturers will still need to reformulate and reword labeling and advertising specific to countries."
