Supplements May Affect Sleep
07/01/2000
Supplements May Affect Sleep CHICAGO--According to a report released by the University of Illinois and published in the June issue of Sleep Medicine Reviews, certain herbal supplements may exacerbate existing sleep problems. In the report, which was an accumulation of medical journal reviews and experiments at the university's sleep research center, an increasing amount of patients experiencing insomnia were found to be taking ephedra. Findings also suggested that valerian and kava worked as mild sedatives and ginseng was found to fight off fatigue. Researchers concluded that herbal supplements for inducing sleep should be used occasionally, such as when traveling and other times when sleep disruptions can occur.
