Newest Study Supports Vitamin K's Link to Bone Health
06/01/2000
Newest Study Supports Vitamin K's Link to Bone Health BETHESDA, Md.--In the May issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a new study supports that vitamin K may maintain strong bones. In the Framingham Heart Study between 1988 and 1995, 888 elderly men and women consumed various levels of the vitamin. Those averaging 56 mcg experienced more hip fractures by 1995 than those reporting the highest intake levels--254 mcg. According to Sarah Booth, the head researcher of the study, vitamin K activates at least three proteins involved in bone health. This study supports findings from a 1999 study, which followed 72,000 women and found low levels of vitamin K increased the risk of hip fractures. For more information, visit www.ajcn.org.
